{Jazz Snob Conversations} The heart of the thing

For those of you who are a fan of my music, you'll be glad to know I visited with a booking agent last
night. Though a Monday, it was a sparkling night on the town. It's always a joy to mix business with
pleasure, and that we did! It was a night of jazz; jazz notes floating on the air, jazz conversations grounded in opinion, and jazz dreams shared between talents.

And it got me thinking...how more in depth can I become with my jazz knowledge this week? While
I grew up listening to jazz, watching Ken Burns documentaries, and singing jazz I know that there
is always room to grow and learn. What great song writers are lesser known that I might be missing?
What experts of their instruments have I neglected?On that note...

So often you hear the term "jazz snob," and it's always a curious one to me. For me, jazz has always been quietly intellectual, as the heart and soul of the thing is the most important. So what's to be snobbish about? Should jazz be treated like literature, analyzed to the point of excluding others? Or should it be treated as a gift, a universal conversation? Are we holding the snobbish qualities dear to our hearts for fear jazz will blend with the stupidity of other musical genres?

Though I function in both worlds, snobbish & universal, I somewhat fear the idea of snobbish jazz, because often jazz can become overwrought, over worked, over thought, over done. In what way is overly analytical better than genuine? Is precise thought better than improvisational thinking? Or are they one in the same? It's not meant to criticize the self proclaimed jazz snob, but rather to understand that way of thinking, because I often that that way too. Were the greats that came before us (and I don't mean the ones in the 50s and 60s, I mean WAY before us) more organic? More analytical? Or both?

It's time to pull out the vinyl, pu

{Exploring your persona or {character} // your many facets

You often see this part of me: classic silhouette + elegant = glamour puss
...but this girl is another part of me...
 Joe Gracey's daughter + Kimmie Rhodes daughter = a woman in love
with a good groove, good tunes, and tex-mex.
...and this glasses wearing, casual, kinda dorky girl is part of me too!
(That's the part of me that blogs every day!)

Today I'm doing something that for me, is monumental. It's not everyday that a photographer challenges us to do not just our stage persona, but another persona as well. Of course Jolie Goodnight isn't a character, I am Jolie after-all, but Mrs. Goodnight tends to be a certain facet of myself. It's the high glam, classic silhouetted, proper side of me. But like most people, I'm mulch-faceted. There is the blogger chic side of me who wears quirky dresses covered in camels with vintage bags and who spends an hour a day devoted to her blog. And then there is the little girl in me, who grew up surrounded by the music royalty of Austin. It's a side I don't mention often, for fear of sounding pretentious. But yes, I grew up sleeping in my Daddy's bass case at my parents' gigs. I hold the twinkle of Willie Nelson's eyes, the deep boom of Waylon's voice near and dear to my heart. And it's something I'm rather fond of. People are always happy to see this side of me appear; the rock n' roll, wearing jeans, 70s Austin, cosmic cowboy, relaxed, always joking country girl with a big heart. Today, I'm photographing as all of these persona separately (where ordinarily they coexist as, well, me.)

So as a performer, artist, blogger, musician, designer, writer, etc it's worth contemplating the sides of yourself. Is there a part of you yearning to come out? Have you put yourself so tightly into a niche that you are afraid to be in another one? Has branding hindered you from exploring all the facets of your personality?

What are your favorite ways to bring out other elements of yourself? I'd love to hear them!

Burlesque Style Series//Featuring:: Cha Cha Velour

Cha Cha Velour

Her name says it all...she is part cha cha, part velour...quite a bit tiki and a whole lotta rawr! Though I've never seen inside her makeup bag, I can only imagine it must be filled with eye shadows galore. This sassy lady doesn't stick to the norm, wearing bold and bright on her eyes and hot bod! If you've been to her digs, you are one lucky fella, her abode is a legendary tiki haven. A perfect melange of sexy and kitsch --- she's festive, flirtatious, and warm!

{Photo Shoot:: Soft & at Home// Sarah Lim}

Today's photo shoot is exploring the softer side of things. It's about the sweet
moments we have at home...a glance through the latest glossies, a soft gaze out
the window, the reluctance to get out of bed. It is nice to find genuine moments.

Demure luxury :: soft colors meets elegant contrasts

anticipation of springtime....

Burlesque Style Series: Featuring// {Orchid Mei}

Orchid Mei

This week's Miss Burlesque Style featured performer is Orchid Mei, a woman with absolutely impeccable taste. Any time she comes around the corner you are inevitably going to be impressed by her attention to detail and flawless finishing touches. Her style is deceptively simple due to clean lines and classic silhouettes. But like her burlesque performances, each moment is so thought out that you have to take notice of her cleverness. Her ensembles reflect those of the 40s, however never seeming kitsch. Like an orchid herself, always fresh, classic, & sweet --- she is perfectly polished! xo, Jolie

{Showgirl Packing?} Southwest Burlesque Showcase

And I'm off! Off to Albuquerque for the Southwest Burlesque Showcase.
I made a happy mistake, accidentally booking my flight a day early for
the festival. Oops! The good news is that I'll be able to attend all of the
fab events.
I can't wait for the showgirl messes that are bound to occur in the room!

{balloons & coffee} work day distractions

Certainly a cause for celebration, yesterday was the first day of the photo shoot for my debut album.
Currently wishing I could show you all the insanely beautiful photos taken in an insanely positive &
happy atmosphere...let's just say, you're going to love them!
Still on cloud nine, despite my busy schedule for the day, it is hard not to be distracted & inspired by
the smell of paper whites and hyacinth, crisp wooden shutters on neighborhood windows...
...pretty light coming piercing the room (I'm a sucker for pretty lighting.)
But there is no time to linger! Coffee, tea, coffee, blog, pack, errands, emails, costumes, phone calls,
  nails, hair, rhinestones & dinner date.
  It all has to be done before I leave for the Southwest Burlesque Showcase this weekend!

             What are your favorite strategies for getting things done and staying on task?
I'd love to hear them! xo, Jolie

{Burleque Style Series//featuring: Ginger Valentine!}

Ginger Valentine

In celebration of a fabulous Dallas Burlesque Festival weekend, our second burlesque darling featured is the queen herself, Ginger Valentine! A wonderfully effervescent woman, Ginger is a stunning vision in blue. So what items could be fit for a queen? For locks that make the entire world envious, a wild brush to keep them seriously slinky! An arbiter of writing, a blingy pen is necessary of course. (You can't expect the queen to use a basic bic can you?) Watch her perform and she'll play games with your heart, but this lovely lady plays other games as well! A deck of cards, dominoes...she's up to the task! She'll need decadent fine china to eat her hubbie's scrumptious meals. But don't expect this royalty to prove lazy, this sunshine-y lady loves to work out! She's a little bit of Ludacris, a little bit punk rock --- she's a classic lady with a modern chic twist! xo, Jolie
